Juicy gig

Nantucket Nectars co-founder Tom First entered a new phase of his career last week - marketing guru for Boston-based Mount Vernon Strategies Inc.

The 6-year-old Mount Vernon specializes in market research, strategic planning, business plan advice and technology consulting. Clients of the 11-employee company include Au Bon Pain, the Vermont Teddy Bear Co., Green Mountain Coffee Co. and WGBH, according to senior partner Charles Collier. First will head Mount Vernon's branding and marketing practices.

During the past 18 months, a lot of Mount Vernon's clients have been consumer goods companies, so First was a natural fit, Collier said.

"They have to make decisions about what to do about their brands, to grow, acquire or drop a brand," Collier said. "Tom brings a tremendous amount of knowledge to the table."

Collier cited Nantucket Nectars' early experiences trying to distribute bottled juice themselves, the company's award-winning label designs and the company's steep growth trajectory under the leadership of First and Tom Scott.

In March, London-based Cadbury Schweppes PLC announced that it would buy Nantucket Nectars - which is now based in Cambridge - from Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc. of Lakeville and minority shareholders.

Most of the projects we are working on now include pricing studies, competitor analysis, financial analysis and technology audits."
